Shipping containers ready for sea freight from China to Australia

China is Australia's largest source of imports, and most of those goods arrive by sea. Whether you are shipping a few pallets or several containers a month, knowing how sea freight from China to Australia works helps you plan stock and control landed costs.

How long does sea freight from China take?

Port-to-port transit from the main Chinese ports to Australia is usually 12 to 20 days. Allow extra time for cargo cut-off at origin, LCL consolidation, customs clearance and delivery. Door to door, most shipments take three to five weeks.

Origin portTo Melbourne / Sydney (approx.)
Shanghai14–18 days
Ningbo14–18 days
Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)12–16 days
Qingdao16–20 days
Xiamen13–17 days

Transit times are typical estimates and vary by carrier, routing and season. Chinese New Year and Golden Week cause factory closures and space shortages, so book early around those periods.

FCL or LCL?

LCL (less than container load) is usually cheaper for shipments under about 13 to 15 cubic metres. Above that, a 20ft FCL container often costs less and arrives faster, because it skips consolidation at both ends. Read our full LCL vs FCL comparison.

What does sea freight from China cost?

Ocean rates from China change weekly with demand, fuel prices and carrier capacity, so any published price goes out of date quickly. Your total cost has three parts:

  • Origin charges: pickup from the factory, export clearance and terminal handling in China (depending on your Incoterm)
  • Ocean freight: the carrier rate per container (FCL) or per cubic metre (LCL), plus surcharges
  • Destination charges: Australian terminal handling, customs clearance, biosecurity, duty and GST, and delivery

Buying on FOB terms and booking the freight through your own forwarder usually gives you the clearest and lowest total cost. Request a quote with your supplier's address, cargo volume and weight.

Save on duty with ChAFTA

Under the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, most goods made in China can enter Australia duty free if you hold a valid ChAFTA certificate of origin. Ask your supplier to arrange it before the goods ship. See how this affects your landed cost with our import duty calculator.

Biosecurity and BMSB

Timber packaging must be ISPM 15 treated and marked, and every shipment needs a packing declaration. China is not currently a BMSB target country, but goods transhipped through a target country can be affected, and rules change each season, so check before you ship.
