Import Duty Calculator Australia

How Import Duty and GST Are Calculated

Import duty in Australia is a percentage of the customs value of your goods, which is normally the price you paid the supplier, converted to Australian dollars. The duty rate depends on the tariff classification. Most goods attract 0% or 5%, and many goods from countries with a free trade agreement qualify for 0%.

GST of 10% is then calculated on the value of the taxable importation: the customs value, plus duty, plus the cost of international transport and insurance. Some goods also attract other charges, such as excise-equivalent duty on alcohol and tobacco, or wine equalisation tax.

Example: a shipment with a customs value of AUD 20,000 at 5% duty pays AUD 1,000 duty. If freight and insurance cost AUD 2,000, GST is 10% of AUD 23,000, which is AUD 2,300. Our customs brokers confirm the classification and give you a duty and GST estimate before you order, so landed costs hold no surprises.
